Harvester Ant Nest Rims Boost Native & Nonnative Plants | Dr. Derek Uhey
Harvester ants—a collective term for ants in the genera Pogonomyrmex, Messor, and Veromessor that harvest and consume seeds—clear vegetation above their nests, resulting in notable bare spots in landscapes. But plants thrive along the rims of these cleared nest disks. A new study finds the rims of nest disks can promote both native and nonnative plants, suggesting harvester ants can play a key role in both invasion ecology and native plant restoration.
